Botox is an injectable prescription medication used to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate-to-severe facial lines. It paralyzes targeted muscles, preventing the movement that creates creases such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and smile or smoker’s lines.
The number of needed Botox injections varies, depending on factors such as the deepness of the lines, your desired results, and how effectively your skin takes to the treatment. In general, crow’s feet require 3 injections framing each eye. Frown lines typically require 5 injections in your forehead.
Botox may cause mild discomfort. Some people compare the injections to a tiny pinch or bee sting. A topical numbing solution or ice can be used beforehand if you have particularly sensitive skin or simply wish to minimize any pain.
Botox is a very quick procedure, typically taking about 10 minutes plus any needed time for consulting and preparation, such as applying ice. Results begin to appear within 24-48 hours. Your results last for up to 4 months, at which point you can schedule your next treatment.
Botox works just as well for men as it does for women. Studies show that 17.5% of people who received Botox for moderate-to-severe frown lines were men. Overall, cosmetic procedures for men have increased dramatically in recent years.
A small percentage of people experience eyelid drooping after frown line treatment. Other possible side effects include allergic reactions, discomfort, swelling or pain, dry mouth, headache, and vision changes. Most people don’t experience lasting problems and are able to get back to their daily activities immediately following treatment.
Botox isn’t intended to alter your ability to express yourself as usual. To ensure best results, discuss your treatment goals with Dr. Nagpal in advance, and no matter where you go, seek treatment from an experienced practitioner. Since Botox results are temporary, you can always request changes if your first treatment isn’t exactly what you were hoping for.
