It’s never too late or too early to start your journey toward beauty at any age.

Start With the Basics

Your skin changes as you age, but there are some fundamental skincare principles you can follow to help keep it healthy and looking gorgeous throughout your life. We recommend that you:

  • Use products designed for your skin type. Whether your skin is sensitive, dry, oily, or a combination of each, quality skincare lines such as those we recommend at Bella offer products that are specially formulated to meet your needs. If you’re following your skincare routine faithfully and not seeing the results you desire, you could be using the wrong product for your skin type.
  • Protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. It’s hard to avoid sunshine in our lovely city by the bay, and we don’t recommend you spend your days in a dark room. Instead, we suggest you lather on plenty of water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more for your outdoor adventures. Choosing lightweight protective clothing and seeking some fun in the shade also help you avoid the aging and cancer-causing effects of UV rays.
  • Try a retinoid to increase cell turnover and exfoliate clogged pores. These actions help reduce the appearance of fine lines and can effectively treat both acne and wrinkles.

These basic steps form the foundation of most skin care regimens, but your routine should otherwise be based on your age and your skin’s specific needs. Thanks to advances in medical science and technology, many innovative treatments also exist that can repair skin damage without the expense and pain of surgery.

In your 30s

Dark spots due to previous sun exposure may begin to appear on your face, neck, and chest. Routine and generous use of sunscreen can help prevent worsening sun damage. We otherwise recommend a multi-pronged treatment approach that includes topical products and perhaps laser resurfacing treatments to reduce the appearance of dark spots, wrinkles, and other skin damage caused by UV rays.

Many of our patients in their 30s are experiencing both early wrinkle formation and persistent acne outbreaks. Topical anti-wrinkle products designed for mature skin may be too heavy and can aggravate your acne by trapping dead skin cells at your skin’s surface and clogging your pores.

Products containing retinoids can help stimulate collagen production, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and helps repair or replace damaged cells. A light antioxidant serum regularly applied to your skin also helps improve the early signs of aging as it protects your skin from further damage.

Now is also the time to consider Botox injections to minimize muscle movement and help prevent permanent, deep wrinkles from forming on your forehead and around your eyes and mouth.

Spider veins are a common problem for women in their 30s and may be a result of pregnancy, heredity, or skin conditions such as rosacea. We recommend noninvasive treatments such as laser treatments or sclerotherapy to remove these unnecessary veins with minimal to no discomfort.

In your 40s

Loss of collagen and elastin that begins in your 30s can cause your skin to lose its firmness and elasticity in your 40s. While it’s often most noticeable on your face and neck, skin laxity can affect other areas such as your arms, abdomen, and thighs.

Expensive and painful surgeries with a long recovery time used to be the only truly effective solution for skin laxity that’s essentially a normal part of aging. Fortunately, advances in medical technology have produced many noninvasive therapies, including the use of laser-light energy to tighten skin and help enhance your body’s collagen and elastin production.

We also recommend you preserve the collagen you still have by incorporating topical growth factors, peptides, and other relevant ingredients into your skincare routine.

In your 50s

Hormonal changes related to menopause are significant in designing effective skincare regimens for women their 50s. Decreases in estrogen and progesterone in the perimenopausal phase causes your skin to become thin and excessively dry.

It’s very important that you maintain a topical skin care regimen designed to restore moisture and strength to your skin. Continue to use sunscreen for any outdoor activities, including car rides to the beach since the sun’s UV rays pass through window glass.

Skin resurfacing treatments that tighten and firm skin as they reduce lines and wrinkles are effective alternatives to surgery for both men and women in their 50s. These therapies also reduce the appearance of age spots and other pigment changes in your skin.
